EMORY, Va. – Randolph College dropped the first end of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Emory & Henry College Sunday 7-6, but rebounded to earn a 10-2, run-rule victory in the second contest of the day. The WildCats finished the regular season with a 26-14 record, which is a school record for wins in a season.
Randolph will head to Salem, Virginia this upcoming Friday afternoon to take part in the ODAC Tournament as the No. 7 seed at 2 p.m. on Field #1 at the James E. Moyer Softball Complex, though the WildCat's opponent is still yet to be determined due to tiebreaking procedures, as Lynchburg College, Roanoke College and Randolph-Macon College all finished with a 15-5 record in ODAC play.
Sunday's action was back and forth, especially in the first contest of the day. Emory & Henry (12-16/4-16) broke through for the first four runs of the game in the bottom of the third, as Hannah Bays connected on a grand slam. Randolph came right back with two in the top of the fourth, as Jess Sanabria (Burgaw, N.C./Pender) scored on a wild pitch and Ashton Ewers (Gladys, Va./William Campbell) drove in a run with a RBI single.
After E&H pushed across another run on a solo homer to make it 5-2, Randolph scored three times as Sanabria connected for a three-run shot down the left field line to knot the game at five. The Wasps' Ashley Ebersole went deep in the sixth inning to make it 6-5, but the WildCats promptly tied the game in the top of the seventh as Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) doubled in Sanabria.
Emory & Henry would get its fourth long ball of the game in the bottom of the frame though, as Taylor Doss led off the inning with a walk-off homer to right-center. Vinson finished with two hits, as did Ewers, while Brittney Via (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) added two knocks in three at-bats. Sanabria had three RBI and three runs scored for Randolph.
Game two was all Randolph though, as the WildCats took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to RBI singles from Via and Ashley Gardner (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge). E&H tied the game with another homer in the bottom of the first, but the WildCats got a solo shot of their own, as Jessica Nowak (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) went big fly for her second career home run.
The visitors continue to add on, chalking up a pair of tallies in the third frame thanks to a two-run single from Vinson. The fourth inning saw Via connect on a two-run shot for Randolph, and the WildCats plated three in the sixth to put the game away.
Via was three-for-three with four RBI and four runs in game two of the twinbill, as all but one player in the starting lineup for Randolph had at least one hit. Sanabria continued to surge with a pair of knocks, while also earning the win in the circle after going six innings and surrendering six hits and two earned runs, fanning five Wasp hitters.
