Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior hurler Logan Carter (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) fired her first career no-hitter in game two of a non-conference doubleheader with The University of Maine at Presque Isle, as the WildCats took both ends of the twinbill Monday afternoon with scores of 14-1 and 9-0.
Carter became the first WildCat pitcher to deny the opposition of a hit since March 24, 2005 when Dani Hansen no-hit Sweet Briar College in a 10-0 victory. She cruised through the Owl lineup, striking out seven hitters and allowing just one runner to reach on a walk in the second inning.
Run support was not an issue for the WildCats in the second contest of the day, as Randolph notched five runs in the first inning. Sophomore Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) posted a two-run single in the frame, and Brittany Willingham (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) also had an RBI single.
Randolph plated three more runs in the second frame, as Brittney Via (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) posted an RBI ground out followed by an run-scoring double by Vinson. Randolph would notch another run in the third inning, cruising to the game two win. Vinson was two-for-two with three knocked in, and Willingham had two RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap.
In the opening contest of the doubleheader, Randolph posted seven runs in the second inning to take control of the ball game. In the stanza, first-year Rachel Hickman (St. Albans, W.V./St. Albans) scored a pair of runs with a single up the middle, eventually scoring on a ground out by Ashton Ewers (Gladys, Va./William Campbell). Willingham would also knock in a run in the frame, as would Vinson with a sacrifice fly.
The host WildCats (21-7) were back at it in the 3rd inning, notching three runs with the big blow being a two-run homer to left by Via. Sophomore Heather Funk (Buchanan, VA/Floyd Co.) also drove in a run during the inning for the WildCats. UMPI (0-6) plated a run in the fourth, but Randolph responded with four in the bottom half, with three coming on a bases loaded triple from Vinson.
Vinson finished game one two-for-two with four RBI and two runs, Funk had two hits and two RBI, and Hickman was three-for-four with two RBI and two stolen bases. Via had two RBI and three runs scored, Ashley Gardner (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) walked twice and scored a pair of runs, and Haleigh Wilson (Stuart, Va./Patrick Co.) scored twice.
Junior Kristen Hutchinson (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) got the win in game one for the WildCats, surrendering just three hits and one earned run while striking out seven UMPI hitters. Randolph stole seven bases in both ends of the doubleheader, the highest total of the year for a double dip..
Randolph will return to the diamond on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a huge conference doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan College.
