Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College softball team got a dominating performance from its pitchers Thursday, shutting out Sweet Briar College twice en route to a doubleheader sweep in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action from the Randolph Softball Field. Randolph earned an 8-0 win in game one before taking game two 4-0.
In the opening contest, Randolph (18-6/3-3 ODAC) got on the board early, notching a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette). The WildCats would add two more in the second frame, as Brittany Willingham (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) doubled in a run and then was scored on a single by junior Brittney Via (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello).
The hosts posted another two-spot in the fourth stanza, as Willingham drove in a run with a single and again came around to score, this time thanks to a RBI knock from Ashley Gardner (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge). The WildCats ended the game in the fifth, scoring three runs, with two coming on a double to left by Willingham.
Willingham was the game one star, going four-for-four with four RBI and four runs scored. All but one WildCat starter had a hit, and Erin Wehrhan (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) and Ashton Ewers (Gladys, Va./William Campbell) each scored a pair of runs. Logan Carter (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) went the distance, surrendering just one hit while striking out 11 Vixen hitters.
In game two, Sweet Briar (0-8//0-6 ODAC) had chances with runners in scoring position, but starter Jess Sanabria (Burgaw, N.C./Pender) worked out of the jams. Randolph posted single runs in the first and third frames to take a 2-0 lead. Vinson knocked in another run in the sixth, and Heather Funk (Buchanan, Va./Floyd Co.) added an RBI in the seventh for the WildCats.
Willingham added two hits and two runs in game for the WildCats, while Haleigh Wilson (Stuart, Va./Patrick Co.) had a hit and a run. Sanabria went four innings to get the win, scattering four hits, and Kristen Hutchinson (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) earned the save after going three innings and allowing no runs and one hit. Tessa Crawford had three hits in game two for SBC.
The WildCats will continue ODAC play this Saturday as they head across town to take on the Hornets of Lynchburg College for a 1 p.m. double dip on Moon Field.
