WildCat Softball Rallies To Earn Doubleheader Split With Bridgewater College Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNCHBURG, VA – Bridgewater College pitcher Heather Jenkins pitched a perfect game in the first game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader against the Randolph College softball team to help the Eagles to a 2-0 victory. Randolph would rally though to earn a split with a 2-1 win in game two of the afternoon.

Jenkins was the story of the first game, as she tossed Bridgewater College's second-ever perfect game. She allowed no base runners over the seven inning contest, striking out three batters in earning her sixth win of the season. BC (9-7/1-1 ODAC) got all the offense it would need in the seventh inning, as Melanie Lamb homered to left field and Haley Lloyd singled in an insurance run for the Eagles.

Randolph College junior hurler Logan Carter (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) was the tough luck loser in game one, but she pitched very well. Carter went all seven innings, striking out eight batters and scattering six hits.

In the second contest, the WildCats (16-6/1-3 ODAC) struck first in the second inning as Hannah Cook (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) singled in fellow first-year Rachel Hickman (St. Albans, W.V./St. Albans) to take a 1-0 lead. The WildCats had the bases loaded in the next inning with no outs, but BC pitcher Aven Thomas worked out of the jam unscathed.

The fifth inning would provide the WildCats with the insurance run they would eventually need, as a Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) ground out scored Brittany Willingham (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) to make the game 2-0. BC did threaten in the sixth inning, scored one run on a RBI single from Karie Burgess.

The Eagles had the bases loaded with no outs with one run already in during the sixth inning, but Randolph sophomore hurler Jess Sanabria (Burgaw, N.C./Pender) worked out of the jam to keep the WildCats up one. In the seventh inning, Carter came on to get the save in helping the 'Cats earn their first-ever regular season win over Bridgewater College in program history.

Willingham paced the WildCats with two hits in three at-bats, making all eight of her plays in the field. Cook had two hits as well for Randolph, while Ashley Gardner (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had a single and walked one. Junior starter Kristen Hutchinson (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) went 4.2 innings, scattering three hits to earn the win. Sanabria was solid in relief, allowing one run in two innings, and Carter got the last out for Randolph.

The Wildcats will be back on the diamond Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. for another conference doubleheader, this time hosting the Vixens of Sweet Briar College in action from the Randolph Softball Field.
