LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's tennis team took all three of the double's flights Thursday afternoon in a non-conference match with Southern Virginia University, using that sweep to catapult the WildCats to a 7-2 win over the Knights in play from the Randolph Tennis Courts.
Sophomore Anna Culpepper (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) teamed with Dina Velazco (Barquisimeto, Venezuela / Colegio Las Fuertes) combined to win at No. 1 doubles 8-4. Sophomores Patricia Verdezoto (Cuenza, Azuay, Ecuador / Bilingue Interamericano) and Kaitlyn Kolster (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) also took care of business for Randolph, earning a 8-2 victory at No. 2 pairs.
At No. 3 doubles, sophomore captain Danielle Lewis (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception) and first-year Emmalyn Snead (Fredericksburg, VA/James Monroe) completed the sweep with an 8-5 win. Randolph needed just two victories in singles action to earn the win.
The WildCats would continue to get good results in individual action. Velazco dispatched of Amy Spencer from SVU with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win, while Culpepper breezed by her opponent at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-2. Kolster chalked up her second victory of the day at No. 4 singles, winning all 12 games played. Snead won her first set 6-4 and then took the second set for the match win 7-6, winning the tiebreak 7-5.
In exhibition action, sophomore Tiandre Forde (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellum) had no trouble in earning an 8-2, pro set victory. Ivy Kuroki earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles for SVU, while Mina Romito also won at No. 6 singles for the Knights 6-2, 6-2.
The WildCats are off for six days before hosting Sweet Briar College March 20 at 4:30 p.m. on the Randolph Tennis Courts.
