Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph showcased its NCAA-leading defense, holding Bridgewater to 30.6% from the floor in a win.
Randolph (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) never trailed, and led wire-to-wire save for a tie at 11-11. The WildCats scored the first six points, but conceded five straight a few minutes later to level the game for the only time on the night.
Sophomore Jason Eddie (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day School) broke the deadlock with a layup while being fouled and senior Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) hit consecutive threes to start an 8-0 run for the WildCats to take the lead for good.
Bridgewater (2-2, 0-1 ODAC) never got within a single possession again after that spurt.
Randolph grew its lead to as much as a dozen in the first half, but back-to-back triples from the Eagles cut the lead to six at the half.
After the break, Randolph started with a 9-2 run starting with an Eddie three 16 seconds in, giving the WildCats a double-digit lead which it would maintain for the final 17:23.
From the 16:16 mark until there was under a minute to go, the game was played within a five point window, with Randolph's lead never getting above its high of 16 or below 12.
Free throw on the game's final play cut the lead to 11, giving the game its final scoreline before Randolph ran out the clock.
Ehilegbu led all scorers with 14 points, followed by three teammates also in double figures. Sophomore Evan Horn (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) connected on all six shots he took, Including five from the floor and two from long range for 13 points.
Eddie and classmate Corey Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham) each had a dozen.
Randolph hit on half of its 44 shots as a team while holding Bridgewater to 19-for-62 from the floor.
Despite the strong defensive effort, Randolph's national-best points against average went up a small bit from 51.00 to 51.75, but is still lower than the average for any other team in the country entering the week.
Tavis Stapleton was the only Eagle in double figures, with 13.
Ehilegbu and sophomore Zach Desgain (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) were the top men on the glass with seven rebounds apiece.
"I thought our team did a great job of sustaining their effort and focus tonight," head coach Clay Nunley said. "We were able to do a good job against a very good Bridgewater team."
Randolph has three games next week, starting with a road battle at Ferrum on Monday. After an ODAC contest at Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday, the team returns home for a Saturday contest against William Peace.
