Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA – No. 23-ranked Hampden-Sydney College put three players in double digits and outrebounded the Randolph College men's basketball team 46-23 as the Tigers earned a 79-63 victory over the WildCats Wednesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center.
The story was the play inside by both Hampden-Sydney's Harrison George and Khobi Williamson. Williamson led the Tigers with a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds, while George added 20 points and 10 caroms off the bench. H-SC (16-2/8-1 ODAC) also chalked up 15 offensive rebounds on the evening.
The WildCats (15-3/6-3 ODAC) bust out of the gates strong, scoring the contest's first six points and led by six on a pair of occasions, the last time coming at 12-6 following a three from first-year Jason Eddie (Charlotte, NC/Davidson Day School). The Tigers responded by putting together a 23-4 run over the next seven minutes of game action to take a 13-point advantage at 29-16.
Hampden-Sydney was able to build the lead to as much as 16, before taking a 41-27 lead into the break. After the intermission, the WildCats charged back trimming the H-SC lead down to four with 7:16 to play in regulation after a lay-up from junior Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft).
After an H-SC timeout following the bucket, George scored the game's next six points on three consecutive plays to push the Tiger lead back to 10. The WildCats got to within seven with over four to play, but a late run was too much for Randolph to overcome.
The WildCats got another strong effort from senior guard Colton Hunt (Whittier, NC/Smoky Mountain), who scored a game-high 33 points. Hunt set the school record for free throws made in a contest with 14, and also pulled in a team-leading nine rebounds.
Senior Chris Battaglia (Smithfield, VA/Portsmouth) added 12 points and a pair of blocks before fouling out, and Ehilegbu finished with six points, four assists and four rebounds. The WildCats shot well from the line making 17-of-23 (73.9 percent), but fought it from behind the arc connecting just two-of-19 (10.5 percent) from three land. The WildCats turned the ball over just six times, which is a program record for fewest turnovers in a contest.
Along with the two post players, first-year guard Mike Murray was in double figures with 15. Sophomore guard Greg Lewis had eight points and five rebounds for the Tigers, who shot 51.6 percent from the field. H-SC earned its first win the Randolph Athletics and Dance center, and now leads the all-time series with Randolph 4-3.
The WildCats will return to play this Saturday in Winchester, VA for another ODAC contest, this time battling Shenandoah University at 4 p.m. in Shingleton Gymnasium.
