Randolph Softballers Rally To Split with Guilford College Friday Afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBORO, NC – The WildCat softball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit in game two to earn a 6-4 win and salvage an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader split with the Quakers of Guilford College Friday afternoon. Guilford earned a win in the first game with a 5-4 score in nine innings.

The first game was an exciting affair, as it required two extra frames. Guilford (17-21/4-12 ODAC) got on the board first in the bottom of the third, but Randolph (18-16/7-9 ODAC) responded with a single run in the top of the fourth inning as Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) doubled in a run. GC came right back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth stanza to make the score 3-1.

The WildCats weren't done though, scoring a single run in the sixth inning thanks to a solo homer from senior Gina Pagano (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley). In the seventh, Randolph tied the game at three to force extras, as sophomore Brittney Via (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) doubled in Lauren Stevenson (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood).

Randolph scored first in the top of the ninth, but Guilford posted two in the bottom half on back-to-back wild pitches. Pagano and Vinson were each two-for-three, and Stevenson and junior Ashley Gardner (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) chalked up two hits in five at-bats. Sophomore Logan Carter (Richmond, VA/Midlothian) came on in relief to toss seven strong innings, allowing only three earned runs.

In the second game, the WildCats erased an early 4-0 lead by Guilford by scoring six unanswered runs for the win. After the Quakers posted four in the bottom of the first, first-year Jessica Sanabria (Burgaw, NC/Pender) came in to stop the rally. She would shut the Quaker lineup down over the next six innings, allowing her teammates to creep back into the game.

Randolph cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning, with Vinson doubling in a run and first-year Chassity Ferry (Melfa, VA/Nandua) following with a RBI single to score Vinson. The next inning saw Randolph post three runs, two coming on a single from Pagano. With the score tied at four, Sanabria doubled in first-year Amber Brooks (Roanoke, VA/Hidden Valley) who was running for Pagano to give Randolph the 5-4 lead.

The WildCats added an insurance run in the sixth inning, as Stevenson doubled and was knocked in with a single from Brittany Willingham (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie). Carter came in to earn her fifth save of the game and preserve the victory for the WildCats. Sanabria got the victory, tossing six scoreless innings, surrendering only two hits.

Gardner was two-for-four with two runs scored, while Pagano finished two-for-four with two RBI. Stevenson added another multi-hit game, her 16th of the season, along with three stolen bases, and junior Amanda Thacker (Madison Heights, VA/Holy Cross) had two hits in three at-bats.

Randolph will finish its regular season Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against Roanoke College at 2 p.m.
