Randolph Women's Tennis Falls to Southern Virginia and Guilford This Weekend

LYNCHBURG, VA – Randolph College got a nice effort from the women's tennis team Friday night, but a few crucial sets went the way of Southern Virginia University as the Knights earned a 6-3 victory Friday evening. Saturday, the women lost a heartbreaker to Guilford College 5-4 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

Friday against SVU, Randolph earned one doubles point thanks to a victory fromKaitlyn Kolster (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan)and Patricia Verdezoto (Cuenza, Azuay, Ecuador/Bilingue Interamericano) at No. 2 doubles. Verdezoto made quick work of her singles opponent with a 6-3, 6-3 win, and senior Janie Campbell (Fredericksburg, VA/James Monroe) won a thrilling 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory in a super tiebreaker.

Kolster won her first set at No. 4 singles, but couldn't maintain the lead falling in a super tiebreaker 10-5. Verdezoto moved her record to 4-1 on the season, while Campbell upped her singles mark to 3-1 on the year.

Saturday at Guilford, Randolph suffered a 5-4 loss to the Quakers in a tough league match. GC earned two of the three doubles points, as Kolster and Verdezoto again earned a victory at No. 2 doubles. Verdezoto had no problem at No. 1 singles, winning three and three while Anna Culpepper (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) captured a straight set victory at No. 2 singles with scores of 7-5 and 7-6 (1).

Campbell continued her singles success of late with another win, this time earning a No. 3 singles win comfortably with scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Unfortunately, Randolph couldn't pull out any of the rest of the singles matches, dropping its second straight ODAC match.

Randolph will be back in action on Tuesday when the Panthers of Ferrum College come to Randolph College for a non-conference match at 4 p.m.
