LYNCHBURG, VA – Randolph College men's tennis has improved this year, but a busy schedule this week may have worn out the young WildCats as Randolph dropped a pair of matches this weekend to Southern Virginia University Friday and Guilford College Saturday.
Friday evening, the WildCats were in all three doubles matches but couldn't capture a point. That meant Randolph would need to win five of the six singles flights to earn the match victory. Unfortunately, only Dan Phung (Hanoi, Vietnam) was able to earn a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win in a super tiebreaker.
That's not to say the matches weren't nailbiters, as two more went super tiebreakers as well. First-year Mitch Franko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe)won the first set at No. 3 singles, but couldn't keep the momentum going in a three-set loss. Shaun Chopp (Williamsburg, VA/Hampton Roads Academy) rallied to earn a 6-1 win in a second set to force a super tiebreaker but came up just short, falling 12-10.
Saturday the WildCats headed down to Guilford College to take on the Quakers, but nothing seemed to fall right as GC earned a 9-0 win. Daniil Lyalko (Reisterstown, MD/Park School of Baltimore) and Chopp partnered at No. 1 doubles, and after keeping it close early fell 8-4.
In singles action, the Quakers showed strong results across the board in earning all six singles points. Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) had set point in the first, but dropped the opening stanza 7-5 before falling in the second set 6-3.
The WildCat men's tennis team will entertain Ferrum College Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. on the Randolph Tennis Courts.
