LYCNHBURG, VA — The Randolph College Men's Tennis team continued its spring season Tuesday afternoon after a week long hiatus from competition. The WildCats took to the courts against Shenandoah University in a non conference matchup between the two Virginia private institutions.
Randolph dominated every aspect of the match, and emerged with an 8-1 victory. The WildCats dropped the first doubles match, 8-3, but proceeded to win the next two doubles matches to jump out to the early lead. In singles play, the WildCats won in dominating fashion. Every Randolph player won their singles match, an achievement that the Men's Tennis team has not accomplished yet this season.
First-year Daniil Lyalko (Reisterstown, MD/Park School of Baltimore (MD)) won his first ever collegiate singles match from the number 1 position. Lyalko defeated Shenandoah player Dustan DeMello in exciting fashion, winning the tie breaker set by a score of 14-12. This marks the first time this year that a Randolph Men's Tennis player has won a match from the number 1 singles position.
First-years Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) and Dan Phung (Hanoi, Vietnam)continued to hold down the back end of the rotation as they have all season. Both Dales and Phung won their match 6-0 and 6-0. With the victory, Dales and Phung are now 5-3 in singles competitions.
Junior Ben See (Hardy, VA/Staunton River) was back in action after suffering from a shoulder injury a few weeks ago. See teamed up with first-year teammate Shaun Chopp (Williamsburg, VA/Hampton Roads Academy) in doubles competition, and won their match 8-4.
With the win, the WildCats improve their record to 4-3 on the year.
The WildCats will be back in action Wednesday, March 14 as they host the Generals from Washington and Lee in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup. The match is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
