DANVILLE, VA – The Randolph College Women's Tennis team was back in action on Sunday, February 26, as they took on nearby Averett University in a non-conference matchup. The WildCats pounced from the beginning, and cruised to a 8-1 victory over the Cougars. With the win, Randolph improves its record to a perfect 3-0 on the year.
In doubles play, Randolph pulled off a 3-0 sweep. In the No. 1 spot, first-years Anna Culpepper (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) and Patricia Verdezoto (Cuenza, Azuay, Ecuador/Bilingue Interamericano) teamed up to earn an 8-3 victory. In the No. 2 position, senior leader Janie Campbell (Fredericksburg, VA/James Monroe) and first-yearKaitlyn Kolster (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) paired to win 8-1. Rounding out doubles play was senior captain Brooke Camper (Smithfield, VA/Smithfield)and first-year Danielle Lewis (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception) who cruised to an 8-2 victory from the No. 3 position.
The dominance carried over to singles play, as five different WildCats were able to pick up a singles victory. Verdezoto stayed perfect on the year, defeating her opponent from the No. 1 position 6-1 and 6-0. Culpepper also continued her solid play, defeating her opponent 6-0 and 6-1. After a marathon performance from Campbell against Lynchburg, she proved that it doesn't always take four days to earn the victory. She defeated her opponent from the No. 3 position 6-1 and 6-1. Also picking up singles victories were Brooke Camper (and Lewis. Both players only needed two sets to send Averett packing.
The Randolph College Women's Tennis team will be back on action two weeks from now on Thursday, March 13 as they take on Shenandoah University. That match could be a sign for things to come, as Shenandoah will be joining the prestigious Old Dominion Athletic Conference next fall.
