Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA — Despite a season-high 18 points from senior Derrick Woods-Morrow (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford), Randolph couldn't get stops when it needed and Roanoke College earned its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory with a 62-59 win Wednesday evening from the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center.
The WildCats (7-9/2-5 ODAC) have now lost their last five conference games, with their last conference win coming December 3 at home against Washington & Lee. Randolph came out of the gates firing, knocking down two threes in the opening minutes to lead 6-0. Roanoke (5-11/1-6 ODAC) would respond, going on a 10-1 run to take a 10-7 lead with 12:43 to go.
Junior Colton Hunt (Whittier, NC/Smoky Mountain) put the WildCats back on top at 12-10 after a three-pointer, one of his five on the night. That was the last time the host 'Cats would lead all night, as Roanoke went into halftime with a four-point edge at 32-28.
The Maroons opened up the half on a 16-7 spurt to take a 13-point lead, their biggest of the game. The WildCats inched back, pulling to within two at 52-50 after another triple from Hunt. After a Jack Hamilton layup and two pairs of free throws from each team, Roanoke led by four with 3:04 remaining.
Woods-Morrow earned a hoop plus the harm with on the next possession to pull his squad to within one at 56-55. Hamilton again answered with a jumper to push the lead back to three, but Hunt was fouled the next trip down and hit the freebies to again make it a one-point game with 1:19 left.
Roanoke's Julian Ramirez made a lay-up off a nice dish from Adam Kessler with under 35 seconds to play to make it a three-point game. After two missed shots from Randolph, Ramirez would net a fast break layup to push it to a five-point spread. Woods-Morrow made a lay-up shortly after that to put the score at 62-59. Randolph pressed and forced a turnover in the backcourt to line up one last shot.
After the inbounds, the host WildCats got deep look from three to tie it, but it rimmed out. Woods-Morrow snatched the rebound and dished it to Zach Desgain (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) who took a three at the buzzer but Kessler blocked the attempt on the way up to seal the win for the Maroons.
Woods-Morrow was five-of-nine from the floor, making eight of his nine attempts from the free throw line. He also netted a double-double, adding 11 boards, two blocks and two steals. Hunt finished with 17 points, and Ehilegbu scored all eight of his points in the first half. JuniorCameron Colquitt (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) had seven points and five assists for the WildCats.
Roanoke was led by Logan Singleton and Kwasi Amponsah, each of whom scored 12 points. Adam Kesslet had 11 points, five boards and three blocks, while Hamilton finished with 10 points. Roanoke fired 55.1 percent (27-49) from the field, making four of its eight three-pointers.
The WildCats will now head out on the road Saturday and travel to Harrisonburg, VA for a conference tussle with the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University at 7 p.m.
