Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA – Randolph College sophomore guard Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) posted a game-high 22 points on eight-of-10 shooting to lift the WildCat men's basketball team past Washington & Lee University 78-70 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center Saturday afternoon.
The victory for the WildCats was their fourth straight on the season, and also marks the second consecutive season that Randolph has started ODAC play 2-0. Ehilegbu's shooting percentage was the third-best in program history among players that hit eight or more shots. He also registered the ninth-most points in a game Saturday.
The contest was back-and-forth in the first couple of minutes, but Randolph rattled off 14 straight points over a six minute stretch to take a 17-4 lead. Randolph (4-2/2-0 ODAC) led the Generals by 19 at one point on a pair of free throws from junior Colton Hunt (Whittier, NC/Smoky Mountain), but W&L (5-3/1-1 ODAC) inched back.
Washington & Lee went on a 12-2 run to finish the first half, as Randolph's lead shrank to eight at 36-28 at the intermission. Randolph came out of the locker rooms inspired, as the lead grew back up to 18, with the run being highlighted by a circus shot, three-point play from Ehilegbu. The lead remained at 18 through the second half, but Washington & Lee made one last charge down the stretch.
With two minutes left, General first-year guard Javon McDonald hit a three to pull his team to within seven. After the WildCats sank some free throws to get the advantage back up to nine, WLU whittled the lead back down to four with 20 seconds, but Ehilegbu and Hunt each hit a pair from the line to put the game away.
Ehilegbu finished with six boards to go with his point total, and though Hunt had trouble shooting from the floor, he still finished with 19 points thanks to his 13-of-13 day from the line. The 13 free throws made were a program record, and it was the second-most attempted in the team's history. Hunt added six rebounds, four assists and three steals as well.
Senior Derrick Woods-Morrow (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford) made four of his six shots from the floor for nine points, barely missing a double-double as he grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds. First-year Zach Desgain (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) did a lot of everything, scoring nine points, corralling seven rebounds and dealt out five helpers.
Junior Chris Battaglia (Smithfield, VA/Portsmouth) added 10 points off the bench for Randolph, which shot 57.5 percent (23-40) from the floor. The shooting percentage of 57.5 percent ranks fifth in team history, and it also was the best since a 58.5 clip against Messiah College December 5, 2008.
The Generals were led by McDonald and JD Ey, each of whom scored 17 points. Ey had a team-high eight rebounds, and Larry Whitaker and Kevin Gill each scored in double figures for Washington & Lee. WLU shot 22-64 (34.4 percent) from the floor, but lost the rebounding battle 38-29.
Randolph returns to the RAD Center Monday evening, December 5 at 7 p.m. with a contest against the Bison of Gallaudet University.
