Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior guard Colton Hunt (Whittier, NC/Smoky Mountain) set the Randolph College men's basketball scoring record with 30 points Wednesday night as Randolph knocked off Bridgewater College 93-78 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams from the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center.
Hunt hit 10-of-14 from the floor, including hitting three of his five attempts from behind the arc. Hunt was seven-of-eight from the charity stripe as well, as he eclipsed the previous scoring record of 26 set by Hunt against Roanoke College last season. Hunt also corralled game-highs of seven boards and five steals.
The 93 points is the second-most Randolph College (3-2/1-0 ODAC) has ever scored in a game, as the WildCats scored 104 against Patrick Henry College back on November 27, 2007. The WildCat shooting was as consistent as it has been all season, as Randolph posted 53 percent from the field in the first half and 54 in the second half.
In a game that was very stop and start in the second half, Randolph converted on 24 of its 34 free attempts in a game that saw 60 free throws. The WildCats led for all but 18 seconds of the ballgame, as Bridgewater (2-2/0-1 ODAC) led at 6-5 at 16:53 of the first half. Randolph led by 10 at the half 42-32.
That is when the Hunt show would make an appearance, as he scored 21 of his 30 in the second half. The WildCat lead fluctuated in the teens much of the second half, with Randolph knocking down its free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
The game was Hunt's eighth game of his career with 20-plus points, and his first of the 2011-12 season. "I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates," said Hunt. "Without them being aggressive and going to the boards, playing defense, I don't get those looks."
Senior Derrick Woods-Morrow (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford) continued to show his endurance, playing a game-high 37 minutes, posting 13 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) had 16 points on six-of-12 shooting, while junior Chris Battaglia (Smithfield, VA/Portsmouth) had 11 points and four boards.
Randolph finished with their tied for their 11th best shooting night in program history Wednesday, knocking down 30-of-56 for a 53.6 percent clip. Randolph also had their best turnover night of the season, giving the ball away only 12 times all night.
Bridgewater was paced by the 23 points from sophomore Ronnie Thomas, while Kenny Waugh had 16 points off the bench for the Eagles. Aaron Adams had 13 points and five rebounds, and Cody Griffith added 11 points and three steals for Bridgewater. BC shot 49 percent (25-51) from the floor, but turned the ball over 18 times.
Randolph returns to action Saturday afternoon with a matinee contest against the Generals of Washington & Lee University at 2 p.m. in the RAD Center.
