Box Score FERRUM, VA — The Randolph College men's basketball team got a career-high 20 points from first-year guard Zach Desgain (Richmond, VA/J.R. Tucker) as the WildCats got a nice road non-conference win over Ferrum College 72-60 in action from Swartz Gym Sunday afternoon.
Desgain was the story for the WildCats (2-2), as he was six-of-10 from the floor, making both shots from deep, while also pulling in eight rebounds, four steals and dishing out four helpers. Randolph never trailed in the contest, and only surrendered a tie score twice early on in the first half.
Offensively, Randolph started the contest out well, scoring 17 points over the first six minutes of the half, building a six-point advantage after a three-pointer from Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft). The WildCat lead would fluctuate from three to seven multiple times before Randolph put together a 7-0 run to lead by 10 at the half 36-26.
After the intermission, the WildCats sprinted out of the gates scoring the first nine points of the stanza to take a 19-point edge. After a Panther mini-run trimmed the lead down to 12, Randolph pushed the advantage back up to 17 and would cruise to the 12-point win.
The WildCats shot a very strong 53.2 percent from the floor, while making 18-of-26 from the free throw stripe. Junior Derrick Woods-Morrow (Greensboro, NC/NE Guilford) had another double-double Sunday, posting 15 points to go with 12 rebounds and two blocks. Ehilegbu finished with 15 points.
Junior Colton Hunt (Whittier, NC/Smoky Mountain) had 13 points and five rebounds in his first start of the season. Randolph earned its second victory in Ferrum, VA, as the WildCats also knocked off FC in their home gym during the 2009-10 season.
Marcus Mayo had 16 points to lead the Panthers, while Lamont King and Donte Thomas each had 11 points. Nick English added 10 points for Ferrum, which finished 24-of-62 (38.7 percent) from the floor on the afternoon. Ferrum took no free throws in the first half and only seven in the entire game.
The WildCat men's team will enter conference play Wednesday evening at home against the Eagles of Bridgewater College at 7 p.m. in the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center.
