HARRISONBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball team played its penultimate regular season match on Wednesday evening as it took on Eastern Mennonite. The two teams alternated set wins and it was the host Royals who came out on top as they won 3-2 (26-24, 25-27, 25-20, 23-25, 15-10).
The WildCats led 6-5 in the first set before the Royals came back to take an 8-6 lead. The two teams would go on to exchange leads. The WildCats led late at 23-22 and 24-23. EMU pulled away with three straight points to end the set and win it 26-24.
With the second set tied at 7-7, the WildCats pulled away with a 9-2 run to lead 16-9. The Royals had a rally of their own as they got to within three points at 16-13. Randolph edged ahead 18-13 but Eastern Mennonite got to within a point at 19-18. The WildCats led 21-18 but the Royals would push forward 22-21. Kills by Mats Beentjes (Beverwijk, The Netherlands Kennemer College) and Elijah Woods (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory HS) gave the 'Cats a 23-22 lead. The Royals eventually led 25-24 but the WildCats scored the last three points of the set to win 27-25.
Eastern Mennonite led in the third set 9-5. The lead eventually grew to 16-11. The WildCats closed to 22-19 late but the Royals would go on to win 25-20.
EMU got out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth frame. Randolph then went on a run of its own, 15-4, to go up 15-8. The Royals closed in to make it 19-18. The WildCats led 24-21 until the Royals made it 24-23. Randolph claimed the set on a Beentjes kill to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Royals tallied the first point but the 'Cats rattled off four straight points to lead 4-1. Eastern Mennonite's 7-2 run, however, put the home team ahead 8-6. The WildCats tied it up at 8-8 but the Royals ended with a 7-2 run to put away the WildCats and win 15-10.
Woods led the team with 14 kills on the night. Shamel Smith (Tamarac, Fla.) added 11 kills as did Beentjes who also had 13 digs. Samuel Looney (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley HS) led in digs with 18. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) contributed 12 digs and a team-best 43 assists. Noah Furr (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Bishop Moore) finished with 11 digs. Zachary Septoff (Cumberland, Md.) had seven block assists and on solo block.
Randolph will conclude its regular season this Saturday when the WildCats host Lynchburg. The match will behind at 12:00 p.m.
