LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball team hosted the University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day. The WildCats came out victorious in their final regular season match of the year as they won 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-21) over the Hornets.
Randolph got out ahead 7-3 in the first set. Ahead 12-10, Randolph moved ahead 14-10 on kills by Mats Beentjes (Beverwijk, The Netherlands Kennemer College) and Shamel Smith (Tamarac, Fla.). The Hornets closed to 14-12 but the WildCats went on a 9-2 run to end the set and win 25-15.
The WildCats got out to another 7-3 lead in the second set. The Randolph lead was as much as 18-12. Lynchburg would get as close as 24-22 but a bad set on the Hornets gave the 'Cats the last point they needed to win the frame.
The third set was evened up at 8-8. Randolph broke away with a 7-2 run to lead 15-10. Lynchburg chipped away at their deficit as it closed to 15-14. The WildCats once again used a 7-2 run to lead 22-16. The Hornets pulled to within three points but at match point, Beentjes' kill sealed the match victory for Randolph.
Beentjes led the WildCats with nine kills and tied for the team lead in digs with seven. Elijah Woods (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory HS) added seven kills and seven digs. Samuel Looney (Fort Worth, Texas/Trinity Valley HS) finished with seven digs. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Insitute) totaled 25 assists and four digs. Smith had four block assists while Zachary Septoff (Cumberland, Md.) had three block assists.
It was the last match for Beentjes and Ethan Meyer (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) who were both recognized before the start of the match.
Randolph finishes its first varsity season with a final overall record of 12-15 and a 4-8 record in ODAC play.
