LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball made the short trip across town to the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday as they took on the Hornets in ODAC action at Turner Gym. The WildCats dropped the first set but rallied to win the next three as it came out on top 3-1 (13-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21).
With the win, Randolph improves to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Hornets got out in front 5-2 in the first set but the WildCats closed to 5-4. Lynchburg then pulled away with a 13-2 run to go up 18-6. Randolph could not cut its deficit any closer as the Hornets won the set 25-13.
Lynchburg won the first point of the second set but Randolph would go on to lead 4-2. The WildCat lead stood at 15-14 but the Hornets would go on a 5-2 run to lead 19-17. The 'Cats answered with an 8-2 run to end the set and win 25-21.
The WildCat lead was 10-9 in the third frame until Randolph rattled off four straight points to pull ahead 14-9. The 'Cats held a lead until the set was knotted at 19-all. After scoring four straight points, the WildCats led 23-19. They would keep the Hornets at bay for the remainder of the set winning 25-22.
With the set tied at 7-7 in the fourth set, Randolph went on a 9-3 run to lead 16-10. Randolph led 21-14 but Lynchburg edged its way back in with a 7-2 run to make it 23-21. The WildCats ended any hopes of a Hornet comeback as two Lynchburg error gave Randolph the last two points it needed to win 25-21.
Shamel Smith (Tamarac, Fla.) was one of three WildCats to reach double figures in kills with 14 and added eight digs. Elijah Woods (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory HS) and Mats Beentjes (Beverwijk, The Netherlands Kennemer College) both had 11 kills each. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) totaled 37 assists.
Randolph travels to Randolph-Macon on Saturday. Game time from Ashland is at 1:00 p.m.
