ASHLAND, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball team faced Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets topped the WildCats 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-20).
Randolph-Macon started the first set strong as it got out to a 5-0 lead. The advantage grew to seven points at 14-7. The WildCats closed to within four points at 18-14 but that was as close as they could get as the Yellow Jackets used a 7-1 run down the stretch to overtake the WildCats and win 25-15.
The WildCats notched the first two points of the second set to lead 2-0. RMC came back to go up 3-2. The set would be tied at 7-7 but the 'Jackets scored three straight times to go up 10-7. Randolph was able to keep the set tight as it trailed only by three points at 22-19. The Jackets, however, scored the last three points it needed to claim the set and win 25-19.
It was a 14-12 score in the third set in Randolph-Macon's favor. The Yellow Jackets went on a 9-3 run to jump ahead 23-15. The WildCats went on a run of their own as it outscored RMC 5-1 to make it 24-20 but Ian Wagenhauser's kill gave the Yellow Jackets the final point to win the set and the match.
Mats Beentjes (Beverwijk, The Netherlands Kennemer College) led the WildCats with 13 kills as he hit .375 on the day. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) finished with 25 assists. Elijah Woods (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory HS) led in digs with five.
Randolph travels to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
