LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's volleyball team hosted Regent in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats led 2-0 only to see the Royals tie the match but the Cats came back in the end to win 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 17-25, 15-11).
Randolph improves to 5-7 overall while Regent falls to 4-2.
In the first set, the WildCats got out in front 5-3. Regent would rally to take a 9-8 lead before a 5-1 run by the 'Cats put the home team on top 13-10. The Royals would tie the set twice at 14-14 and 15-15. Randolph pushed ahead 18-15 but Regent grabbed the lead back at 20-19. The WildCats countered with a 6-2 run down the stretch to win 25-22.
Randolph led 12-8 in the second set and broke away to go ahead 18-10. The WildCat cushion was enough as they went on to win 25-17.
The third set saw Regent go up 9-5. Randolph closed to within one point and tied the set three times. The Royals moved up 19-16 and would go on to win 25-22.
The fourth set had both teams trading off points early on. With the set tied at 12-12, the Royals went on a 10-2 run to take a 22-14 lead. Randolph could not cut into its deficit as Regent would go on to win 25-17 to force a deciding set.
Regent led 4-3 in the fifth set. Randolph grabbed the lead back on a service error and back-to-back kills by Blaine Richardson (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield HS) to make it 6-4. The Royals closed to 7-6 but Randolph pulled ahead 10-6. Randolph's lead was enough in the end as it went on to win 15-11 and clinched the match.
Mats Beentjes (Beverwijk, The Netherlands/Kennemer College) led the 'Cats with 19 kills and hit.421 on the day. He added 12 digs. Shamel Smith (Tamarac, Fla.) totaled 13 kills. Conner Maher (Buckeye, Ariz./Odyssey Institute) tallied 43 assists. Zachary Elbert (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS) led in digs with 21.
Randolph travels to Wilson College next Friday. Match time from Chambersburg, Pa. will be at 7:00 p.m.
