Volleyball Defeats Ferrum 3-1

FERRUM, Va.- Despite dropping the first set of the match, the Randolph volleyball team was able to recover as it came back to defeat Ferrum 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-18) on Wednesday night. The WildCats improve to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC while the Panthers fall to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Panthers built up a 4-0 lead early in the first set. The lead grew to 9-4 until the 'Cats cut it to 9-7. Randolph was able to keep up with Ferrum as it eventually closed to one point of tying at 22-21. Ferrum outscored Randolph 3-1 down the stretch to take the win and lead 1-0.

In the second set, the WildCats at one point trailed 7-4. Trailing 12-10, the 'Cats went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 16-12 but Ferrum countered with a 4-0 burst to tie the set at 16-all. The two teams then traded off points back and forth until Randolph used a late 5-2 run to pull away and claim the set.

The WildCats were on first in the third frame as they collectively hit .500 to dominate the Panthers. A lead that stood at 5-3 grew to as much as 14-5. With its lead at 15-11, Randolph ripped off a 10-2 run to win the set and lead the match 2-1.

Clinging to a 7-6 lead in the fourth set, Randolph used a 5-1 run to go up 12-7. The lead grew to 20-13 and the Panthers never got to within five points of tying as the WildCats stayed ahead to take the set and match.

Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) had another solid outing with a double-double effort of 17 kills and 14 digs. Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) tacked on 14 kills. Ambrose also had three service aces. McGinnins and Lauren Morgan (Bedford, Va./Liberty) both had three blocks each. Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) picked up 44 assists. Sam Verhaagen (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) led in digs with 16.

Randolph will next head to Salem for an ODAC tri-match on Saturday. The WildCats face Shenandoah at 1:00 followed by host Hollins at 3:00.
