LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted Greensboro and Brevard in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon at the RAD. The WildCats dropped their first match of the day 3-0 but rebounded later to take down Brevard 3-1.
Greensboro 3 Randolph 0
In the first set, the WildCats fell behind 7-5 but rallied with four straight points to take a 9-7 lead. GC's 9-2 run threw the lead back to the Pride as they went ahead 16-11. The 'Cats hung in and closed to one point, 23-22, but Greensboro got the last two points it needed to take the frame 25-22.
Randolph's only lead in the second set was 2-0 until Greensboro went ahead 4-2 and never trailed again. The WildCats were able to close to one goal several times but could not sustain a run to go on top.
The WildCats led 6-5 in the third set but GC's 9-2 run set them apart as the Pride won 25-14 to take the match.
Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) and Tomi-Lauren McGinnis (Ringgold, Va./Dan River) both totaled eight kills in the match. Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) picked up 22 assists. Sam Verhaagen (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) chipped in 15 digs.
Randolph 3 Brevard 1
The Tornadoes had leads of 17-9 and 20-11 in the first set and looked to run away. Randolph picked up some late momentum with a rally to get to 24-23. A service error on McGinnis, however, gave Brevard the winning point to go ahead 1-0 in the match.
Randolph jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the second frame and didn't look back on its way to a 25-11 win to even the match at 1-1. In the third set, the WildCats led 6-0 in the beginning and turned in another 25-11set win. The 'Cats trailed 4-3 but ripped off a 7-0 run to lead 10-3 in the fourth. The Tornadoes moved to within three points, 11-8, but Randolph stayed ahead and tallied the last four points to secure the match win.
Ambrose put down 15 kills and picked up eight service aces to go with 12 digs. Lauren Morgan (Bedford, Va./Liberty) had a solid outing with 12 kills. McGinnis laid out 10 kills and 13 digs. Taylor Webb led with 20 digs with Verhaagen right behind her with 19. Webb also had 36 assists.
Randolph travels to Ferrum for ODAC play on Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
