LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted its second match of the year and first against and ODAC opponent on Friday as they welcomes Virginia Wesleyan to the RAD. The Marlins came out on top with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-19) victory.
VWU is 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The WildCats even their record at 5-5 and are now 1-2 in the ODAC.
The WildCat had some early momentum and a raucous home crowd behind them early in the first set as they got out to a 5-4 lead. The Marlins then used a 16-5 run to go ahead 20-10 on their way to the set win.
In the second frame, Randolph again had a lead of 5-3 but Virginia Wesleyan came back with four straight points to go up 7-5. The WildCats kept up but fell behind 17-9 after a 6-0 Marlin run. Randolph tried to get back in but Virginia Wesleyan stayed out in front to claim the second set.
The Marlins got out to a 9-2 advantage in the third set. It was 14-7 VWU until Randolph stringed together a small 3-0 run to get to 14-10. VWU went ahead 20-10 but the WildCats a rally to make it 20-15. The 'Cats got to within four points of tying at 23-19 and looked to extend the match to a fourth set but the Marlins tacked on the last two points they needed to take the set.
Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) led in kills with 10 and added seven digs. Sam Verhaagen (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) paced the team with nine digs. Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) tallied 15 assists.
Randolph hosts a tri-match tomorrow afternoon. The WildCats face Greensboro at 12:00 p.m. and then Brevard at 4:00 p.m.
