ASHLAND, Va.- The Randolph women's volleyball team faced Randolph-Macon in the team's second Old Dominion Athletic Conference match of the season on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets took the victory with a 3-1 win over the WildCats.
The WIldCats picked up the first two points in the first set before RMC tallied three straight to go ahead 3-2. Randolph tied it up at 3-3 but the Jackets rattled off a 12-0 run to stake themselves out to a 15-3 advantage that the WildCats could not recover from.
Randolph-Macon dominated the second set as it won 25-9. The WildCats did respond with a big third set. Randolph built up a 13-4 lead which included at one point a 5-0 run. The 'Cat lead expanded to 20-7 as the Yellow Jackets did not have a response to the Randolph threat. The Wildcats went on to claim the set 25-11 on the strength of a .308 hitting percentage.
The fourth set saw the hosts get out to a 6-1 advantage. The WIldCats stayed within striking distance trailing 14-9. RMC began to distance itself from Randolph as its lead grew to 22-12. The WildCats, however, put up a fight as they went on a 6-0 run to close to 22-17 and hope to force a fifth set. The Yellow Jackets were able to stave off the WildCats as they won the set 25-17.
Pacing the WildCat offense on the evening was Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) with seven kills. Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./St. Anne's Belfied) laid down three aces and also had four blocks. Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va. Northampton) tallied 15 assists. Sam Verhaagen (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian accumulated 13 digs with Ambrose adding 10.
Randolph looks to get back in the win column as it hosts Virginia Wesleyan in another key ODAC matchup on Friday night. Match time is at 7:00 p.m. The two teams met earlier this month in Norfolk with the Marlins taking a 3-0 win.
