LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team led visiting Eastern Mennonite 2-0 in their match on Friday at the RAD Center. The Royals, however, mounted a furious comeback and took the next three sets to win 3-2 (12-25, 16-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-13).
The WildCats drop to 10-11 overall and 4-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Royals improve to 11-10 and 4-6 in the conference.
Randolph dominated the first set as it collectively hit .385 and won 25-12. The WildCats hit .289 in the second set and put down 14 kills to take the second set 25-16.
EMU came back to take a big 20-9 lead in the third frame on its way to winning 25-15. The fourth set was tight early on with the teams trading off points. The 'Cats edged ahead 12-8 but the Royals closed the gap to tie and eventually go ahead 15-13. The WildCats chipped away and got to 21-20 but EMU rattled off the last four points to win 25-20 and force the deciding fifth set.
Eastern Mennonite led by as much as 8-3 in the fifth frame. The WildCats were able to rally and tie the set up at 12-12. Back-to-back kills by EMU's Kara Durren put the Royals at 14-12. Maddie Gaus' (Newport News. Va./Summit Christian Acad.) kill made it 14-13 but the Royals got the winning point to complete the comeback on another kill by Durren.
Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd, Va./Floyd County) led with 16 kills with Gaus adding 12 and Audrey Antesberger (Scottsville, Va./Saint Anne's Belfield) 10. Antesberger also picked up three assisted blocks on the night. Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) led in assists with 38. Sam Verhaagen (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Christian) had a game-high 22 digs with Ambrose adding 16, Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) 12, and Taylor Webb, 10.
The WildCats are back on their home floor tomorrow morning as they face Bridgewater in their final ODAC regular season match. The Eagles dropped a 3-2 decision to Guilford in the second match of the night. Game time on Saturday with be at 11:00 a.m.
