Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – Prince Charles (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) notched a hat-trick for the Randolph College men's lacrosse team as the WildCats fell to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Virginia Wesleyan University, 23-6, on Saturday afternoon in WildCat Stadium.
Although the Marlins broke open the scoring gates early on in the first quarter, the WildCats were able to keep them at bay for over 12 minutes before Virginia Wesleyan scored again to make it a 2-0 game. The Marlins would score with 18 seconds left to take a 3-0 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead to 5-0 with 6:56 remaining on the clock but Kadri Hearns (Cumming, Ga./South Forsyth) would finally break through the Marlins' defensive barrier at the 6:18 mark to give Randolph its first goal of the game. Although the Marlins would score several minutes later to improve their advantage to 6-1, Charles launched the ball to find the back of the net at the 2:15 mark, trimming the deficit to 6-2. Still, Virginia Wesleyan would record a last second goal to take a 7-2 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Marlins went on an 8-2 run in the third quarter, pushing their lead to 15-4, and would go on to outscore the WildCats once again in the final period with yet another 8-2 burst to take home the final 23-6 tally.
Charles and Hearns each fired off eight shots for the WildCats with Hearns making three on target and causing three turnovers while Charles had four on goal and picked up seven ground balls. Shane Shifflett (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and Lee Tookes (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) both ended with one goal for Randolph while Jace Cornell added seven ground balls in the loss to go along with two caused turnovers.
Matt Lindenbaum (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) took the loss in net as the senior goalkeeper faced 30 shots and made 15 saves while picking up a team-high eight ground balls. Corey Boswell and Seth Ahrens also made an appearance in net with Boswell facing three shots and Ahrens facing seven, making two stops.
Nick Zepko and Tyler Conn led the Marlins with four goals apiece while Joe Couture added three goals and Dante Castillo scooped up a nine ground balls. Chris McTague took the win in the crease, making one save on two shots.
The WildCats drop to 0-7, 0-2 ODAC and will head out on the road on Saturday, March 24 when they face conference rival Hampden-Sydney College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
