Men's Tennis Falls to No. 31 Washington and Lee in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Randolph College men's tennis team took a 9-0 defeat against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Washington and Lee University on Thursday afternoon in its season and conference opener.

The match was originally supposed to take place on the Randolph Tennis Courts but due to rain, the contest was moved to Washington and Lee's Duchossois Tennis Center.

The tandem of Bradley Strober (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and Edgar Ellis (Hickory, N.C./Hickory) did not make it an easy win for the Generals in first flight doubles as the pair fell in a hard fought 9-7 battle. In flight two doubles, Daniel Crutcher (Newton, N.C./Maiden) and Joe Kaneda (Media, Pa./Pinecrest) were swept 8-0, while John Coffron (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) and Minh Hoang (Lynchburg, Va./Niagra Catholic) also fell 8-0 in flight three.

Washington and Lee dominated singles play to take the sweep as Strober fell 6-2, 6-0 in flight one while Crutcher also fell 6-2, 6-0 as the flight two player. Ellis dropped a 6-0, 6-0, decision in flight three with Kaneda falling 6-1, 6-1 in flight four. Coffron competed in flight five singles, taking a 6-0, 6-0 defeat while Hoang played in the sixth flight and fell to his opponent 6-0, 6-0.

The WildCats fall to 1-2, 0-1 ODAC and are home tomorrow when they take on the Seahawks of St. Mary's College (Md.) at 2 p.m.
