Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph College volleyball team fell to visiting Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Washington and Lee University in straight sets (14-25, 19-25, 18-25) on Wednesday evening in the RAD Center.
Early in the opening set, the WildCats rattled off a quick four points to take hold of the lead and remained ahead as a 5-4 run increased the deficit to 8-5. However, the Generals soon started to gain momentum and capitalized on several Randolph errors to pull ahead, 9-8, forcing the WildCats into a timeout. Coming out of the break, the Generals pushed a 5-0 run for a 14-8 margin and would continue to keep the WildCats at bay, eventually securing the 25-14 win.
Despite the Generals grabbing a slight edge in the start of the second set, Randolph kept the score close, trailing by three points (10-7) before pushing a 4-0 rally to pull ahead, 11-10. Washington and Lee took back the lead several points later and would remain ahead with Randolph hot on its tail. After a brief intermission with the score at 18-16 in favor of the Generals, a 5-2 spurt placed Washington and Lee at set point. The WildCats capitalized on a service error to cut the deficit to 24-19 but the Generals landed the set winning kill shortly after for a 2-0 advantage.
The final set saw the Generals march ahead off of a 7-0 run and continued their offensive pressure to increase the margin to 19-9. The WildCats would slowly chip away at the lead, eventually roping the score to 24-18 but the Generals landed the final kill to seal the set victory and the match win.
Autumn Troxell (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) posted eight kills and 19 digs for the WildCats while Mackenzie Ambrose (Floyd,Va./Floyd County) floored six kills. Brooks Gillerlain (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) doled out 13 assists for the match with Taylor Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) adding six assists, in addition to six digs while Kennedy Webb (Nassawadox, Va./Northampton) contributed nine digs and three service aces.
Randolph falls to 4-9, 1-3 ODAC and will take a week off before hitting the road to face Guilford College on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
