'Cats Drop Heart-Breaker to Yellow Jackets

ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team took a 2-1 lead into singles action on Saturday against Randolph-Macon College.  However, the back and forth action continued with the Yellow Jackets winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match 5-4.

The three matches in doubles all provided lots of intrigue.  At one, Doug Corbett and Bradley Strober played strong and took five games.  Ultimately, the two fell.  It would not be the same at two and three.  Kyle Unruh and JT von Seggern continued their great run at number two.  The WildCats were in control the entire time, winning 8-2.  Tuan Tran and Trevor Johnson teamed at three and had a difficult challenge.  Games were traded for the entire match, but the 'Cats were able to get the 9-7 win.

Von Seggern continued his great play on the day in singles.  He won the first set at number two after giving up only a single game.  He gave up a few more in the second, but showed great resolve in winning.  Strober had his hands full at number one.  The first two sets were back and forth the entire way.  Strober won the first 6-4, before falling in a tiebreak in set number two.  However, he dominated the third, winning 6-1.

The remaining WildCats – Johnson at three, Corbett at four, Tran at five, and Joe Kaneda at six – all had tough battles.  Each match was close, with Corbett winning seven games.  Tran forced his opponent to seven games in the first before falling as well.  However, the Yellow Jackets were able to win the matches and seal the 5-4 win.

Randolph (7-4 overall, 3-3 ODAC) will continue to play on the road.  However, its next match will be in the Hill City, as the WildCats travel to take on Lynchburg College (4-9, 2-4) on Wednesday.  Play begins at 3 p.m.
