WildCats Sweep Marlins
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches on Saturday, after defeating Virginia Wesleyan College 9-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup.
Doubles action began the day, and the WildCats started out the match in strong fashion. Keyu Jin and Aubrey Hawn continued to show how well they play as a tandem. The two won the top spot, 8-2. Jenna Sweet and Ashley Schmitz teamed again at number two and played a tough tandem. The two gave up four games, but pulled out a well-earned win 8-4 win. Samantha Dickerson and Kristen Hamilton teamed up at number three for the third-straight time. The two got their first win together, taking down their opponents 8-2.
With the WildCats up 3-0 entering singles, the team did not need to do much to get the win. However, the team finished off its strong match in flawless fashion. Schmitz highlighted the action at number four, as she made quick work of the Marlin. She won 6-0, 6-0 in short time. Hawn was nearly as good at number two. She gave up only a single game in the first set, before sweeping in the second. Sweet played very strong at number three. Sweet was not as good as the two first-years, but she was nearly that outstanding. She won 6-1, 6-1.
Jin had a little bit more of a battle in the first set at number one. However, she moved on to the second set with a 6-3 win. She continued her tough play and won the second 6-2. Dickerson was stout and consistent over her two-set win. She gave up only four games (6-2, 6-2) in the victory. Finally, Lauren Appel rounded out play at number five. She had a tough battle in the first, going back and forth until she got the 6-4 win. However, the second was a breeze, as she won 6-1.
Randolph (8-2 overall, 5-1 ODAC) will start a three-match road swing on Friday. The WildCats will begin the action by traveling to take on Sweet Briar College for a 3 p.m. match at Amherst Middle School.
