Randolph Continues Winning-Streak against VWC

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team defeated Virginia Wesleyan College 6-3 in a tough Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match on Saturday.

Doubles featured three tough matches, but the WildCats emerged victorious in two of them. Bradley Strober and Doug Corbett were unfortunate at number one.  The two played well, winning four games but fell.  Tuan Tran and Trevor Johnson had the reverse fortune at number three.  The senior pair worked well together, winning 8-4.

The match of the contest came at number two doubles, as JT von Seggern and Kyle Unruh went back and forth against their counterparts.  It was so close that a tie-breaker was needed.  However, the WildCats showed their mettle, winning that 7-2, and taking it 9-8.

Singles were up next and Joe Kaneda was dominant at number six.  He took over right from the start, and won the match 6-0, 6-0 in quick succession.   The other five matches were much closer, especially at number two.  Von Seggern unfortunately came up short, as both sets went to tie-breaks.  However, the Marlin was able to take both sets 7-6.  Strober dropped the top spot, but three through five went to home side.

Johnson played very strong at number three, and gave up only five games on the way to a 6-3, 6-2 win.   His doubles teammate, Tran, had a back and forth first set, winning 6-4.  However, he dominated at number two, winning 6-2.  Corbett had a tough battle at number four, but it would go his way.  He won the first 6-4, before dropping the second 6-3.  There was a third set instead of a super-tiebreak.  The senior showed his toughness, and got the 6-2 third set win.

Randolph (7-3 overall, 3-2 ODAC) will head on the road for four of its final five matches.  The first comes at Randolph-Macon College next Saturday.  Play begins at 1 p.m.
