WildCats Battle Nationally-Ranked Generals
LEXINGTON, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team played its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match of the year on Thursday. The WildCats traveled to Washington and Lee University, falling to the 38th-ranked Generals 9-0, in a much closer match than scores showed.
The WildCats continued with the same doubles pairings against the eighth-ranked team in the region. Bradley Strober and Doug Corbett were the team at number one. The 'Cats fought and kept each game close, but could not take one. JT von Seggern and Kyle Unruh played strong at two-doubles. The two were able to take several games off the team, before falling. Tuan Tran and Trevor Johnson rounded things out at number three. The pair kept it close in each game, taking one before dropping the set.
Strober had one of the taller tasks on the day at number-one singles. He played against the 20th-ranked singles player in the region, Jordan Krasner. Strober played the first set close, grabbing two games. He kept battling in the second, but lost.
Spots two, three, and four saw some of the tightest matches between the two teams. Von Seggern played at number two, and went back-and-forth in the first set. He won four games, but could not get to the necessary six. He added another game in the second, but dropped the match. Johnson had the best day of all the players. He won six games, spread out over the two sets. In the second, he nearly pulled out the win. Corbett also looked very strong in the fourth spot. He took away two games in the first set, before winning three in the second.
Tran and Joe Kaneda were the players at five and six for the WildCats. The two played very strong against the tough competition, but could not pull out wins.
Randolph (3-1 overall, 0-1 ODAC) will head on the road for the next three matches. However, all three will take place next week in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The first will come against St. John Fisher College on Sunday.
