Women's Basketball Falls to Greensboro, 66-54, in Day One of Jean Edge Classic

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.Taylor Samuels (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) recorded 22 points for the Randolph College women's basketball team as the WildCats fell to Greensboro College, 66-54, in the first day of the Jean Edge Classic hosted by NC Wesleyan College.

After a tight first quarter that capped off with a 17-all score, Greensboro started to pull away from the WildCats off of a 12-6 run for a 29-23 edge with 4:22 left to play. Randolph managed to close the gap to 32-30 thanks to a 3-pointer by Samuels but the Pride pulled away once again for a 37-30 edge, forcing the WildCats into a timeout.

Coming out of the break and with two minutes remaining in the second period, Randolph managed to put up two points for a 37-32 score but the Pride would close out the first half with a last second layup for a 39-32 advantage.

Despite Randolph putting up the first few points on the scoreboard in the third quarter, the Pride gained a 45-43 lead midway through the period. The WildCats slowly climbed their way back up the point ladder, cutting the deficit to 45-42 before Sarah Wright (Mechanicsville,Va./Hanover) hit a layup at the buzzer to make it a 45-44 game heading into the final quarter.

Although The WildCats continued to trail close behind the Pride in the fourth period, Randolph would level the score to 50-all as Samuels connected on a pair of free throws at the 6:47 mark. However, Greensboro would soon escape the clutches of the WildCats to jump ahead to a 61-52 lead with 1:45 remaining on the clock. Despite Randolph's best efforts, the WildCats were unable to catch the Pride as time expired to seal the 66-54 win for Greensboro.

In spite of the loss, Randolph recorded a 40.0 field goal percentage (22-of-55) to outshoot Greensboro, which totaled a 35.7 field goal percentage (25-of-70) from the floor. The WildCats also held a 45.5 3-point percentage (5-of-11) while both teams drew even with 42 rebounds apiece.

Samuels made 8-of-15 shots from the floor while converting 4-of-4 shots from beyond the arc to pace the Randolph offense while Kalyn Banks (Clinton, Md./From The Heart Christian School) recorded nine points and 11 rebounds. Alexis Calloway (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) finished the game with seven rebounds and two blocks while Daijah Johnson (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) totaled four assists in the loss.

The WildCats (1-1) move on to face host NC Wesleyan tomorrow at 4 p.m. to close out its weekend at the Jean Edge Classic.
