Second-Half Run Downs Randolph
LYNCHBURG, VA – Southern Virginia University scored three goals in a span of seven minutes in the second half to defeat the Randolph College women's soccer team in a non-conference game, 3-2, on Saturday night.
Alissa Gembach earned the first shot of the game shortly after the first whistle. It was stopped by Megan Turner, and that save turned the momentum in favor of SVU. The Knights had three shots in the direction of the Randolph goal, with Stephanie Quirk stopping one of them.
However, soon after that the WildCats were the first team to get on the board. The 'Cats had a three-on-two fastbreak, with Patricia Garrett leading the charge. She sent a through ball to Delaney Doyle, who beat Turner to the top right corner for the first of the game.
Southern Virginia tried to answer shortly after, forcing Quirk into two saves, with one of them as she dove left off a quick one-touch pass. Gembach then had another opportunity on goal, but her free kick just barely caught the crossbar and stayed out.
The teams exchanged shots over the final minutes of the period but there was only one true dangerous attempt. After a foul, Emily McFadyen stepped up and curled a low shot to the near post. Quirk dove and forced it out of bounds, keeping the score at 1-0 entering the half.
SVU proved to be the aggressor starting the second half. The team earned several chances, and were thwarted on a couple by Erin McClelland and Natalia Tomlin. However, in the 66th minute, the Knights broke through. Tatiana Monsen slipped behind the defense and lofted a ball just outside the 18 into the back of the net.
Doyle had the next opportunity shortly after to retake the lead, but Turner was there for the stop. Quirk copied her counterpart a few minutes later, but could do nothing on the next attempt as Monsen scored her second on a one on one. Then at the end of 73rd minute, Taylor Martin made the score 3-1 to complete the blitz.
But the WildCats answered back. The hosts pushed and forced Turner into a save, and had several other opportunities. Then, Sam Hablas got behind a defender with the ball. She beat Turner in a one on one and fired it into the top right corner to bring Randolph within one. The team made a few more attempts, but it would not succeed, as the Knights won.
Quirk made six stops in the game, while Turner made five for the Knights (3-3 overall).
Randolph (0-4-1) will be off until next Saturday. The WildCats will open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play during Family Weekend with a 1 p.m. game against Virginia Wesleyan College (2-3).
