Second Quarter Run Propels H-SC to Victory over WildCats

LYNCHBURG, VA – Hampden-Sydney College went on a 5-1 run in the second quarter, helping the Tigers defeat the Randolph College men's lacrosse team 15-6 on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.  The game also served as the Cancer Awareness Game for the WildCats, as the team wore tie-dye shirts in pregame warmups.

H-SC scored quickly in the first period, tallying a goal off the initial faceoff win.  Prince Charles won the following faceoff for the 'Cats, but the offense turned it over.  H-SC capitalized and made the score 2-0 at the 13:56 mark.  The rest of the period settled down for both sides.

Baden James forced two early turnovers to give the WildCats possession on two different occasions, but Randolph could not find the back of the net.  The goalies also traded saves during the long stretch where neither team scored.  Cam Davis stopped two and Mitch Renfrow made one.  The Tigers continued to put pressure on the WildCats defense, but Spencer Matthews forced a turnover, setting up a fast break attempt.  Graham Southwick took advantage and bounced a shot into the back of the cage to halve the deficit, right before the end of the first.

Both teams traded early possessions in the second, but it was the Tigers who started their big run.  At the 11:37 mark, Connor Pool finished off his hat trick to start the run.  Less than a minute later, Hampden-Sydney scored to make it 4-1.  Davis halted the run for several minutes, making two more saves, but the Tigers tallied two more times.

The WildCats won the next faceoff and James had the ball behind the midfield line.  He sprinted through the defense and fired in a shot for his first of the year.  However, Pool found the back of the net with only four seconds to bring the lead to 7-2 at the half.  The Tigers continued the momentum into the third, and scored three goals in the period.

Randolph responded at the beginning of the fourth, as the team earn a man-up opportunity after a Tiger penalty.  Shane Soghomonian came from behind the net and his low shot found the back of the net.  Matthews picked up the ground ball on the following faceoff.  On that possession, Brett Pausic lost the ball on a drive, but Andrew Gleitz scooped up the ball on the doorstep, and scored to bring the 'Cats within six.

The two sides then traded goals, the WildCats quickly responded after a faceoff win.  Kadri Hearns skipped the ball across the top to Andrew Risse, who fired it in the back of the net.  Soghomonian then scored after a quick fast break to answer a Tiger goal, and keep Randolph within six.  However, H-SC scored three late ones to seal the 15-6 victory.

James led the team with six caused turnovers and three ground ball pickups in the game.  Alex Leyva played well at the 'X', winning 12 of his 19 attempts.  Leyva and Brian Crosby both corralled a team-high four ground balls.

Pool finished with four goals, while Jake Koferl had a hat trick for the Tigers (8-5 overall, 3-2 ODAC).
