Ewers Stands Tall in Goal, but WildCats Fall to LC
LYNCHBURG, VA – Ashton Ewers stopped double-digit shots for the sixth-time this year, but the Randolph College women's lacrosse team fell to Lynchburg College 21-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference Action (ODAC) on Saturday.
Ewers was key right from the start, as she made two early saves. However, the team could not convert the ensuing clears, giving the ball back to the Hornets. After the second attempt, Lynchburg started its run with a goal.
The 'Cats had the next opportunity, but Taylor Riccardi's attempt was saved by Ewers' counterpart, Treva Tyson. LC came back down, but Ewers was there again to keep them out of the back of the net. LC continued its run, but Ewers and the defense played very well. She stopped two shots, and Ewers and Taylor Gamble both forced turnovers.
Nicole Dorton won the next draw control and the WildCats put the pressure on. Three shots went the way of the goal, but all just missed. After the three chances, Riccardi got the 'Cats on the scoreboard with a nice drive. Unfortunately, the Hornets responded with a large run to expand their lead. It was ended with 33 seconds on the clock in the first, as Chelsea Marciniak fired one in the back of the net. But LC answered right before the end of the half.
The hosts came out of the gate with another run, but Ewers continued to make stops. Riccardi also forced a turnover during the half. However, it was not enough, and Lynchburg won the game.
Riccardi caused two turnovers during the game and scooped up two ground balls. Dorton continued to shine at the draw, winning nine during the game, which ties the fifth-highest single game effort. Ewers also picked up two ground balls.
Sidney Gleason and Kat Francis both notched hat tricks for the Hornets (8-3 overall, 4-1 ODAC).
Randolph (2-10, 1-3) returns home on Wednesday. The WildCats host Shenandoah University (2-10, 0-4) in an ODAC contest at 6 p.m.
