Davis Plays Big in Net, but WildCats Drop Final Home Game of the Season

LYNCHBURG, VA – Cam Davis was stout in net in his final game at WildCat Stadium, but the Randolph College men's lacrosse team lost to Washington and Lee University 17-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday.

The game began early in order to avoid any potential weather issues, and the Generals got on the board first after the early start.  The team used a free possession to score a goal as a penalty was called on the WildCats.  However, the 'Cats did a nice job of preventing a goal during the ensuing man-down, but A.J. Witherell found the back of the net, shortly after it expired.

Soon after, Randolph went down two men, but Davis came up with two tough saves.  The Generals retained possession, but Baden James forced a turnover to get the ball back.  However, W&L repaid the favor and found the back of the net, and followed it with another quick one to take a 4-0 lead.

The WildCats then were awarded two EMO situations after doing a solid job of preventing Washington and Lee from scoring.  McKinzie Garnett blocked a shot that started a break.  On the following man-up, Ryan Campbell found Graham Southwick all alone near the goal, and Southwick fired it in to cut the deficit to three.  Davis made two more stops, holding the score at 4-1 going into the second.

Randolph started the second well, as Davis stopped two more shots in the first couple of minutes, while Garnett forced a turnover.  Unfortunately, Joe Perrella scored at 12:13, and it started a large run, that would last almost 30 minutes.

Davis made seven saves during that time, including an impressive one where a W&L attackman caught the ball wide open on the crease, but Davis stoned him.  Prince Charles and Baden James also forced turnovers during that stretch.

The WildCats started the fourth off strong, as Shane Soghomonian ripped one in the back of the net less than a minute into the period.  However, the momentum did not last long, as W&L took one back at 13:05.  The defense finished out the period very well, as Matt Lindenbaum came in for Davis between the pipes.  Lindenbaum stopped five shots he faced, with Spencer Matthews and Luke Hunley each forcing turnovers.  However, the Generals added one more, closing out the win.

Davis finished his three quarters of action with 13 saves and five ground balls, which was a team-high.  James added to his ODAC-leading total of caused turnovers with two in the game.  Alex Leyva had a good day at the 'X' with six wins and three ground balls.  He almost had several more victories, but the team barely missed pulling in the ground balls.

Perrella and Chris Rusbuldt finished the game with four goals for the Generals (12-3 overall, 7-1 ODAC).

Randolph (8-8, 2-6) will play its final game of the year on the road.  The WildCats will travel to Guilford College (7-8, 3-5) in an important game on Saturday.  The two teams are in the race for the final ODAC Tournament spot.  The first faceoff begins at 1 p.m.
