'Cats Continue Record Season with win on Senior Day
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis continued the best season in program history with a 9-0 win over Lynchburg College on Saturday. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest followed the honoring of the two seniors – Evan Scarborough and Dario Schiano-Moriello – and the two seniors on the women's team.
As always, doubles started the match off. However, this match featured some of the newer pairings playing at different spots, and one completely new pairing all together. Q Manglapus and JT von Seggern moved up to the top spot, but it made no difference. The pair dominated on the way to an 8-1 victory. Trevor Johnson and Schiano-Moriello teamed again, but this time at number two. It was a battle in the second spot, as the score was pushed past the traditional eight-game win. Johnson and Schiano-Moriello needed to win nine games, but the two did for the victory.
Doug Corbett teamed with Tuan Tran for the first time at number three. The two had a tough battle, but Randolph ended doubles up 3-0, as the pair only gave up four games on the way to the win.
Things were shuffled around a little bit in singles action as well, but it made no difference. At number one, von Seggern won in straight sets, with his opponent being doubled up in the first and tripled in the second. Johnson stepped up in the second spot and played very well, earning his fourth win at the spot on the year. Manglapus improved to better than .500 at the three after a tough battle. He won the first with ease, but needed a tiebreak to win the second. He beat his opponent 8-6 in the tiebreak to get the 'W'.
At the four, Corbett won easily in the first set, before facing more resistance in the second. However, he won after only dropping five games. Schiano-Moriello was even more dominant at five. He overwhelmed his opponent from the get-go. Schiano-Moriello gave up two games in his first set win, but gave up none in the second, sealing the sweep. Finally, Tran played at six and had a hard fought first set win. He needed to win a seventh game, but he did. He followed it with a 6-2 victory in the second to seal the clean sweep of the Hornets.
Randolph (10-6 overall, 5-5 ODAC) once again has improved its most wins in a single season. The team will now head to the ODAC Tournament, which begins next weekend. Tournament pairings will be released at the beginning of the work week.
