'Cats Fall despite Comeback Attempt
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's tennis team hosted Bridgewater College in a match on Friday that featured several different changes before being played. The 'Cats made a comeback attempt in singles, but fell 5-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match.
The Eagles were originally supposed to host the match, but it was postponed to this Friday. With the rain forcing it indoors, the match was moved to the Crosswhite Athletic Club in Lynchburg. Having the match indoors meant some matches were not finished.
Dina Velazco and Jenna Sweet partnered at number one once again and faced a very tough task. The two battled and won seven games, however BC's pair pulled out the win 9-7. The next two pairs were switched up as Alex Wieczorek and Emmalyn Snead were matched at number two, while Samantha Dickerson and Shelby Lutz were the pairing at three. However, Bridgewater won both matches, taking a 3-0 lead into singles.
Velazco came out strong at number one. She battled through a 6-4 first set win, before cruising in the second. She gave up only a single game on the way to a win. Sweet was even better at number two as she gave up only three games on the way to the victory. However, Bridgewater stopped the comeback attempt there.
Snead and Wieczorek were the other two players with finished matches in singles play. Snead and Wieczorek played tough, but the two fell at number three and five respectively. Dickerson was tied 5-5 before the match was ended, while Lutz was in the second set of her match when it was called.
Randolph (9-8 overall, 1-8 ODAC) hosts Lynchburg College on Saturday. Prior to the 1 p.m. match, the WildCats will honor its two seniors: Velazco and Snead.
