Marlins Edge WildCats in Close Women's Tennis Match

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Randolph College women's tennis team had an intense match with Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday, but the WildCats ultimately fell 5-3.  The match was played indoors at Centre Court in Newport News, which meant the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match was played to decision (once a team has five wins the match is over).

As always for the season, Dina Velazco and Jenna Sweet teamed up at number one.  The two were dominant in their match, giving up only a single game.  It was the second-straight day to have a convincing win.

Emmalyn Snead and Samantha Dickerson were the duo at number two and played well, but could only get two games.  Alex Wieczorek and Shelby Lutz fell in the third spot by the same score.

With doubles over, the teams moved to single with the Marlins only needing three wins for the victory.  Sweet would not allow it to happen against her in the second spot.  She defeated her opponent for the second-straight day, giving up only three games.  Dickerson was up shortly after at number four and she played very well in the first set, winning 6-1.  The second was more of a battle, but she came out on top, 6-4 for the two-set victory.

Velazco played at number one and had a very tight match.  Her counterpart, won the first set, but Velazco showed her quality, taking four games.  She followed it with a big 6-1 set two, forcing a tiebreak.  The two went back and forth, until Mia Proctor earned the win at 10-7.

Wieczorek and Lutz each played well at fifth and sixth, respectively.  Wieczorek won six games, but could not pull out a set, while Lutz was victorious in five games, but had the same fate, giving VWC the win.

Randolph (8-4 overall, 1-4 ODAC) will return home next Friday for another ODAC match.  The WildCats host Randolph-Macon College, with the action slated to begin at 3 p.m.
