Ewers Stops 16 Shots, but Generals Earn the Victory

LYNCHBURG, VA – Ashton Ewers had a great day in net, stopping 16 shots for the Randolph College women's lacrosse team, but Washington and Lee University left with the win.  The visitors outscored their opponents 21-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) on Saturday.

Ewers came up big early on as she stopped two shots within the first minute and a half.  However, at 28:24, the Generals found the back of the net for the first time of the night.  Ewers continued to play well stopping six shots, but W&L was still able to go on a run and take a commanding lead.

Shortly after Washington and Lee made it 9-0, Ewers saved a free position attempt.  The visitors put on a great ride and Ewers could not find anyone.  However, Taylor Riccardi beat her opponent deep and Ewers launched a pass.  The Generals goalie came out of the net but could not beat Riccardi there.  Riccardi picked it up and fired it in the back of the net for the goal.

Ewers made several more stops over the remainder of the half, and forced a turnover late in the period, but W&L would lead 15-1 at the break.

The defense led by Carrie McCane and Chelsea Marciniak played well in front of Ewers starting the second.  Ewers stopped two more shots before the Generals scored their first of the period.  Ewers kept making stops and the WildCats forced several turnovers over the final minutes, but the Generals left with the 21-1 win.  Teagan Stanley and Taylor Gamble both caused one during that time.

Ewers led the team with five ground balls and one assist.  Maddy Graves had four goals and one assist for the Generals (8-5 overall, 6-0 ODAC).

Randolph (2-12, 1-5) will head on the road for its next game.  The WildCats travel to Bridgewater College (7-7, 2-4) on Wednesday for another ODAC tilt.  The game begins at 7 p.m.
