Early Run by SU Takes Down WildCats

LYNCHBURG, VA – Shenandoah University used an early 6-0 run to help defeat the Randolph College women's lacrosse team 19-3 on Wednesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

Annie McCorry started the run off with a quick goal.  The Hornets finished it off at the 23:30 mark, as Nakona Wolfe tallied shortly after a draw control.  Nicole Dorton corralled the next draw.  However, Shenandoah got the ball back and went on the offensive.  The team turned it over back to Randolph, and Taylor Riccardi got the WildCats on the board soon after.  Riccardi drove from the top left and fired it home for the goal.

But SU answered with three-straight.  However, the run took over 11 minutes as the defensive play was very stout for Randolph.  Anna Belliveau stopped two shots, and the rest of the defense guarded the visitors' sets very well.  It was highlighted by Carrie McCane causing a turnover.

Right after the run, Riccardi and Marciniak forced the Hornets to turn the ball over and get the 'Cats in a good scoring position.  After a foul, Teagan Stanley was awarded a free position shot, and she capitalized.  Unfortunately, the visitors came back with four in a row, to take a commanding lead to the half.

The WildCats defense did a great job during the early stages of the second half as well.  The 'Cats begun by holding the visitors off the board, as Belliveau made a good save.  Stanley and Dorton caused turnovers in different ways, as Stanley forced an illegal screen call to get the ball back to the WildCats.

Hannah Bradley and Stanley both earned free position attempts during this time, but the Hornets defense followed that of Randolph's by keeping the hosts out of the net.  SU turned it over with 17:14 on the clock and the WildCats beat the ride for the successful clear.  Chelsea Marciniak got the ball and attempted two drives.  On her second one, she made a nice spin move and bounced a low shot into the back of the net for the first goal of the second half.  Shenandoah then ended the game with a six-goal run, sealing the win.

Leah Hughes pulled in four draw controls for the WildCats, while Nicole Dorton had three.  Marciniak, Stanley, and McCane all forced two turnovers.  McCane's were even more impressive with both of them coming in the first half, as she and Riccardi had to leave at halftime in order to present their Senior Presentations.  True Student-Athletes.

McCorry led the Hornets (3-10 overall, 1-4 ODAC) with five goals.

Randolph (2-11, 1-4) will remain at home for this weekend's game.  The WildCats host Washington and Lee University (7-5, 5-0) as part of a big day at home for Randolph Athletics.  The 'Cats end the day with the game beginning at 7 p.m.
