WildCats Get First ODAC Win in Shortened Match
LYNCHBURG, VA – While the conditions were not ideal, the Randolph College women's tennis team took down Hollins University 5-2 for its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory of the season on Friday. The match was played indoors at the Sports Racket due to rain outside. With that being the case, fewer courts were available, but the WildCats still earned the win.
In first doubles, Dina Velazco and Jenna Sweet made quick work of their opponents, winning 8-2. The pairs at number two and three were combined for the second weekend in a row. It paid dividends for number two, as Emmalyn Snead and Samantha Dickerson earned a big 8-3 victory. Alex Wieczorek and Shelby Lutz played tough at number three, but the pair could not get the win.
Singles were up next and the 'Cats were even more dominant. Velazco cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory, which is very impressive giving up only four games between doubles and singles. Sweet gave up one more game, but still had a quick day in singles. She won number two 6-2, 6-1. Shelby Lutz sealed the victory at number six, taking a hard fought 6-4, 6-3 win.
Snead had the toughest match, with it coming at number three. She fell in the first set, but came back strong to take a 6-3 win. It forced a tiebreak set, first player to 10 points. She battled, but her opponent was the first to 10.
Fourth and fifth singles went unfinished, however, the WildCats were doing exceptionally well. Dickerson was unlucky, as she was only a game away from winning her match at four. She had the lead 6-3, 5-0 when it was called. Wieczorek was in another battle at five. She dropped her first set but was winning in the second when it was called.
Randolph (8-3 overall, 1-3 ODAC) heads on the road Saturday for its next match. The WildCats will take on Virginia Wesleyan College in Newport News, VA. The match was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but was moved indoors and up to 11 a.m.
