Franklin Pushes Goucher past WildCats in Women's Lacrosse
LYNCHBURG, VA – Jojo Franklin scored five times for Goucher College, helping the visitors defeat the Randolph College women's lacrosse team 16-3 on Saturday in a nonconference game.
Franklin started the game off quickly, winning the opening draw control and scoring her first of the game after only 12 seconds. On the next possession Katie Jones forced a turnover, but the Gophers took back possession and added to their lead. It was similar on the next as Taylor Riccardi caused a turnover after the draw, but once again GC regained the ball. Franklin scored her second and third soon after.
Kathy Butler forced a visitor turnover soon after, but Goucher added to the advantage. However, Hannah Bradley continued her great start to the season, as she scored in her third consecutive game. She used her shiftiness to drive through the defenders and score her fourth of the year. Unfortunately, the Gophers took the momentum back and went on a run.
Following the run, Bradley had another strong attack at the crease, and fired a shot. It went over the crossbar, but Dana Cavallo was there to keep the ball in the sticks of Randolph. Cavallo drove from behind the cage. Cavallo ripped in her first career goal. However, GC answered right before the intermission, leading 13-2 at the break.
In the second half, the WildCat defense shut down Goucher early on. Chelsea Marciniak blocked a shot and caused a turnover during that run. However, after 10 minutes, the Gophers broke through to extend their lead.
The 'Cats continued to fight as Riccardi caused another turnover, and scooped up the loose ball. Leah Hughes drove into the eight-meter area and was fouled, earning a free-position attempt. She followed through and scored her first of the day. The two teams traded possession for several minutes, before Goucher added to its lead late in the half, sealing the victory.
Nicole Dorton grabbed four draw controls in the game. Bradley finished another solid day with five ground balls and one caused turnover. Riccardi scooped up three ground balls to go along with her two caused turnovers.
Franklin added five ground balls, three draw controls, and five caused turnovers in the contest. Jessica Borucki chipped in four goals and two assists for the Gophers (2-2 overall).
Randolph (0-3) will continue its homestand on Wednesday. The WildCats will host Medaille College from Buffalo, NY. The first whistle will go off at 1 p.m.
