WildCats Fall to Maroons in Women's Tennis

SALEM, VA – The Randolph College women's tennis team took on Roanoke College on Friday afternoon, but the WildCats fell 9-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match.

The doubles saw some different pairings than usual, except for the top pairing.  Dina Velazco and Jenna Sweet combined at one as usual, and played tough, but fell after winning two sets.  Emmalyn Snead and Samantha Dickerson combined at number two for the second time this season.  The pair dropped the second spot with the same score as number one.  Finally, Shelby Lutz and Alex Wieczorek teamed up for the first time at three, but could not pull out a victory.

Velazco had the best match of the afternoon at number one.  She won her first set with ease, 6-2, but dropped the second set in close fashion.  A third-set tiebreaker was needed to decide the match.  Velazco and her counterpart, Emily Henderson, went back and forth the entire tiebreak.  A player needs to get to 10 and win by two.  Velazco and Henderson were tied at 11, before Henderson took the match.

Several players were playing at different spots than usual in singles.  Sweet played at number two, but dropped the match.  Snead moved up to the third spot for only the third time this year.  She took five games before succumbing.  Dickerson played at number four and forced her counterpart to a tough first set.  Wieczorek and Lutz then played at five and six, but dropped the matches.

Randolph (7-2 overall, 0-2 ODAC) return home on Saturday.  The WildCats will play Emory & Henry College in the Cancer Awareness match, with the first serve starting at 1 p.m.
