Randolph Kruse's to Victory over Hollins on Senior Day
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's soccer team hosted Hollins University on Saturday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest. The WildCats honored their eight seniors – Maggie Croft, Taylor Gamble, Alissa Gembach, Leah Hughes, Megan Kruse, Erin McClelland, Devon Nowicki, and Sarah Sivick – before beating the visitors 5-0. The win was the first of the season for the 'Cats and the third-straight in the series.
The win started with a unique moment as all of the seniors started in the game. Right from the get-go, it was clear that Randolph would control the game. Kruse made a long pass from the right side of the field, that got by a few defenders and it found Sivick in the box. She turned on it and fired it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead just under three minutes in. It was the first of her career. Four minutes later, the ball and the players switched sides. Sivick found Kruse on a cross, and Kruse found the back of the net.
The rest of the half continued to feature the dominance of the WildCats. The team continued to get chances but did not convert. Finally, in the 44th minute, Sam Hablas sent a long through ball to Hunter Robinson. Robinson wasted no time in beating the HU goalkeeper, and tallied her first career goal.
The second half contained similar play by the WildCats and featured some players who were getting valuable time for the first time. After 15 minutes of action, Delaney Doyle sent a perfect ball behind the Hollins backline where Croft was waiting. She took one step and sent a ball into the back of the net from behind the box. The 'Cats had several more chances while looking for number five.
Then in the 74th minute, a HU defender knocked a cross down with her hands in the box. Gamble stepped up and sent her first-career goal into the back of the net to make it 5-0. Towards the end of the game, all of the seniors subbed back in to celebrate the victory on the field.
All but two members of the team saw action in the game (both backup goalies), giving valuable experience to all. The backline did a nice job of holding Hollins to only four shots, with Shelby Lutz earning the shutout after stopping two of them. The WildCats finished the game outshooting the visitors 30-4 (11-2 on goal) and earning eight corners to their one.
Hannah Armstrong made six stops in the game for Hollins (2-12 overall, 0-5 ODAC).
Randolph (1-7-1, 1-3) will finish up its short home stand on Tuesday. The WildCats will welcome Sweet Briar College (1-10, 0-4) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
