'Cats Come from behind to Stun E&H

EMORY, VA – The Randolph College women's soccer team came back from a goal down to earn a key 2-1 victory over Emory & Henry College on Friday night.  It was the WildCats third-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win.

Both defenses began the game very stoutly, not letting either attack get a good opportunity on goal.  But the 'Cats would threaten first after a corner.  Patricia Garrett sent the service high to Erin McClelland and her shot sailed just over the bar.  A few minutes later, Garrett beat a Wasp and sent her shot just right of the post.  Soon after, Alissa Gembach fired a free kick into the box, that Delaney Doyle almost headed in.

However, it would be E&H who would get on the board first.  Quinn-Lynn Bates made a terrific stop, coming off her line and diving to keep a first attempt out.  But the Wasps kept attacking, and Gillian Hogg tallied to take the lead.  Soon after, Bates was called upon once again to make a tremendous stop, and she rose to the occasion.

But Randolph continued to be aggressive, as Garrett found a one-on-one after getting behind the backline.  However, her shot was stopped by Kayla Wright.

With the half winding down, it looked like the score would remain 1-0.  But a long ball found Garrett near the sideline.  She sent a cross to the middle of the box to Doyle.  Doyle made a small move in between defenders and scored to tie the score at the half.

The second stanza saw the same battles to start in the midfield.  However, it would not take as long for the WildCats to break through.  Garrett had a nice run, forcing Wright into another save.  Then in the 56th minute, Garrett finally broke through as she came down the right side and lifted the ball into the top of the net for the lead.

Bates had to make a few more saves in the half, but the 'Cats were the far more dangerous team.  With just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, Garrett took a corner on the right side of the field.  It came to Devon Nowicki, and Nowicki rocked the crossbar.  It looked as if she scored, but the advantage stayed at 2-1.

Even with the lead, Randolph continued to press looking for another tally.  Hunter Robinson forced Wright to make another save, while Garrett sent another shot over the bar.  E&H also had a couple of chances, but Bates and the defense kept them out, preserving the win.

The 'Cats outshot the Wasps in both categories, 17-14 overall and 10-7 on goal. The team also earned eight corners to the hosts three.  Bates finished the game with six saves, while Wright stopped eight for Emory & Henry (4-10 overall, 1-5 ODAC).

Randolph (3-7-1, 3-3) heads back on the road for its next game.  However, it will be a quick turnaround, as the make-up game at Guilford College (5-5, 2-3) will happen on Monday.  Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
