Jurney Powers WildCats to Tournament Championship
LYNCHBURG, VA – Troy Jurney scored two goals and added two assists as the Randolph College men's soccer team beat Southern Virginia University 6-1 on Saturday night. For his efforts, Jurney was named MVP of the Tiger/WildCat Classic, in which the 'Cats finished first with the only 2-0 record.
Randolph jumped on the board early on, as Jurney proved to be a menace down the left side. He sent a cross into the box at the 4:11 mark, and Nick Rodriguez finished it off for his first collegiate goal. It would prove to be the only tally of the first half, but not because of a lack of chances. Randolph had two separate goals barely disallowed due to two offsides calls. Kostner Olson also made five saves in the half to keep the score at 1-0.
However, the flood gates opened after the intermission. Blake Heatherly sent an early corner kick into the box, where Jurney headed in his first of the year. Three minutes later, Jurney completed his brace. He fired one in from the left side, from 30 yards out.
In the 56th minute, the WildCats added to their lead. Rodriguez controlled the ball on the right side, and crossed it to the center, where Travis Brown scored his first of the year. This time however, Southern Virginia responded with an equalizer. Josh Smith found Alexander Droubay for his first of the season.
However, Randolph took back the four-goal advantage in the 78th minute. Kyle Unruh received a pass from Austin Black at 20 yards and it landed top right for the 5-1 lead. Finally in the 84th, Jurney, working on the left side again, crossed it to El Hadji Beye who chipped it in for his second in two nights.
For the second game in a row, the WildCats had a large advantage in corner kicks (8-1). Randolph also outshot SVU 25-7, with a 15-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Olson made nine stops for the Knights (0-3 overall) in his first collegiate start. His counterpart, Matt Tourbin made three saves in his first collegiate start.
Joining Jurney on the all-tournament team, was Beye, Heatherly, Julian Williams-Milne, and Nate Juth. Williams-Milne was stout on the backline all weekend, while Juth proved to be a force in the middle.
With the two wins, Randolph won the title, while Averett University took second after defeating Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday night. The Knights finished fourth.
The WildCats (2-1) start a three-game road trip next weekend. The first will be on the road at #3 Messiah College on Friday night. The game begins at 7 p.m.
