Men's Soccer Completes Comeback in Season Opener

BUENA VISTA, Va. – On an already scorching day to open the season, the Randolph WildCats Men's Soccer team brought the heat late, connecting on two goals in the final three minutes to storm past Southern Virginia, 3-2, Tuesday night.

After a scoreless first half, Randolph (1-0) broke through in the 56th minute. Marcus Cortes got two cracks at goal, with his first attempt turned away by the Southern Virginia keeper before he drew a foul. On the second opportunity, Cortes made no mistake, firing a missile past the keeper off an assist from Corey Williams to put the WildCats ahead.

The Knights answered quickly, finding the equalizer exactly three minutes later. Just over four minutes after that, Southern Virginia struck again, converting on a penalty kick to take a 2-1 lead.

The WildCats didn't roll over. With time winding down, Brad McCall slipped past a defender and buried a shot in the back of the net at the 87:11 mark, pulling Randolph even at 2-2.

Then, less than two minutes later, the comeback was complete.

With just 1:02 remaining, Sage Dombrovkis found himself with an open look and made it count, beating the keeper to put Randolph back on top, 3-2. Southern Virginia's final Hail Mary attempt was off the mark, and the WildCats held on for their first season-opening victory since 2023, and their first season-opening road victory since 2021.

Randolph controlled the shot count, outshooting the hosts 16-9 and putting 10 shots on target. Cortes led all players with six shots, including four on goal. Williams added two shots to go along with his assist, while Dominic Cortes made two saves in the victory.

The WildCats return home on Saturday, September 5, when they host Johnson & Wales. The match has been rescheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
